The 19th of July is International Daiquiri Day. In observance, we are dedicating today's cocktail blog to this delicious concoction.
According to cocktail legend, the Daiquiri was invented by an American engineer by the name of Jennings Stockton Cox (try to repeat that name five times after downing three Daiquiris). In the late nineteenth century, Cox was searching for iron ore deposits at the Daquiri mine in Cuba. In one version of the story, Cox and a fellow engineer sat down together one evening and concocted the cocktail with ingredients on hand, namely rum, lemons and sugar. In a second version, Cox's creativity came into play when the gin ran while guests were in town visiting. Once fact remains undisputed. Bacardi Carta Blanca was indeed the rum used in the first Daiquiri, and the result was divine. Today, the Daiquiri is one of the most beloved rum cocktails worldwide.
The key to a great cocktail is to find the perfect balance between sweet and sour. In the modern version of the Daiquiri, limes are used instead of lemons. Some Daiquiri recipes call for more sugar syrup than lime juice. Our favourite version calls for twice the amount of lime juice as sugar syrup. A beloved variation of the classical Daiquiri is the frozen strawberry Daiquiri, the perfect cocktail on a hot summer day. 6 cl White rum (Happy Hour recommendation: Plantation Three Stars White Rum)
4 cl Freshly squeezed lime juice
2 cl Sugar syrup
Combine rum, lime juice and sugar syrup in a cocktail shaker. Add ice cubes and shake vigorously for at least 15 seconds. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and enjoy.
Frozen Strawberry Daiquiri
Note: This recipe yields 3-4 servings, depending on the size of the cocktail glass.
12 cl White rum
8 cl Freshly squeezed lime juice
4 cl Sugar syrup
10 Frozen strawberries
5 Ice cubes
Combine the rum, lime juice, sugar syrup, strawberries and ice cubes in a blender and blend for about 2 minutes. Pour into a martini or margarita glass and enjoy!
